Dear Partner,
Everyone deserves a better life. But not everyone desires a better life. Some desire it, but have given up hope. Those who never give up progress to see improvements in their lives. The scriptures teach us that God wants us to have a better life. That is why Jesus came so we “may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance (to the full, till it overflows). Hence, we should continually seek to improve our lives. We all need improvements in our lives—it could be in our spiritual lives, health, finances, marriage, family, relationships, career, education, etc. In these pages, I want to share with you keys to improving your life in 2013 and beyond.
Paul’s epistle to the Philippians gives us a number of keys we need in order to improve our lives. We read in Philippians 3:”7 But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. 8 Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith; 10 that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death, 11 if, by any means, I may attain to the resurrection from the dead. 12 Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. 13 Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, 14 I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” (verses 7-14, NKJV).
One of the keys to improving our lives is to take stock of our lives and identify where we need improvement. Paul took stock of his life, identified what he had attained, and what he needed to do. It is easy to just drift along with other people as if one’s present condition was the best that one could get or hope for. When we examine our lives and compare it with what God has promised, do we see any areas that fall short of God’s best for our lives? Then, those are certainly areas that need improvement. For some people, the failures of the past could also tempt them to give up any hope of improvement. For others, past successes or achievements could make them feel so satisfied that they fail to desire any improvements. Paul tells us that one of the keys to improving our lives is for us to forget the past—all the failures of the past. We can also give God thanks and glory for the successes of the past, but we should not stop there. We can build on the successes of the past, and move to a more glorious future.
Another key to improving our lives is to grow in knowledge. In Philippians 3:10, Paul’s desire was to know God. If we are to experience any improvement in our lives, we must grow in the knowledge of God. Knowledge is important for progress, success and victory in life. Our knowledge of God is very important and we must get that knowledge through the Word of God, fellowship with the Holy Spirit, prayer, and corporate fellowship with the body of Christ. Paul felt this was so important he constantly prayed for the believers he was ministering to so they would know God. He wrote to the Colossians, telling them, “For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy” (Colossians 1:9-11). He also prayed for the Ephesians “that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places” (Ephesians 1:17-21).
As we know God more and more and operate in His wisdom, we experience improvements in our lives—spiritual, physical, financial etc. as we take hold of His promises for our lives. In addition to gaining spiritual knowledge, we must get the knowledge pertaining to the areas we want to improve in our lives. For example, we may have to get some knowledge relating to food and diet if we are to improve our health. Similarly, we may need some knowledge to improve our finances, marriages, relationships, careers, etc. Invest time and resources to learn from books, tapes, CDs, DVDs, short courses, coaches, mentors, etc., and gain the knowledge which is essential to improving our lives.
Another key to improving our lives is to always recognise the awesome power of God. God is able to do anything and everything we want to accomplish or have in life. In Philippians 3, Paul expressed his desire to see the power of God. He also prayed for the Ephesians that they would know “what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places” (Eph. 1:20). The power of God is like no other, knows no failure or limits, and is always available to every believer. When our hope is in the power of God, we can expect to see improvements in our lives—we can expect to overcome failure, sickness and disease, lack and poverty, etc. You can ignore every opinion contrary to the Word of God, knowing that the power of God would work for you. In addition to these keys, we also need faith. We have to not only believe in God, but also believe that He wants improvements in every area of our lives. A vital key to seeing improvements in our lives is to take action. Knowledge, desire, and faith are not enough. We must take tangible action towards improving our lives, otherwise we will be at the same or worse state than ever before.
There is an honourable lady in the gospel of Mark who is not mentioned by name but who is such a wonderful inspiration. She took stock of her life and realised she needed improvement in her health. I encourage you to read her story from Mark 5 verses 25-34. From the text, we note that in spite of the numerous times this lady failed at improving her health, because the doctors could not cure her, she did not give up. She decided to forget her past failures and look forward to a future full of good health. When she heard of Jesus (she obtained knowledge), she believed Him to be the Messiah. She believed in the power of the Messiah to heal where ordinary doctors and physicians had failed her and taken her money at the same time. But she also acted out her faith. She got up and went to touch the hem of Jesus’ garment. She was rewarded with healing, wholeness, and total improvement in her life. No matter what you may have experienced in the past, you can experience improvements in your life this year. Get knowledge through the Word of God, books, CDs, music, etc. Believe in God’s power and take action. May you progress and excel in every area of life.
